Lower Limb Orthotics: Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthoses (KAFO)

At Palmetto Orthotics and Prosthetics, our team of experienced orthotists specializes in providing customized lower limb prosthetics, including Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthoses (KAFOs). A KAFO is a type of orthotic device designed to provide support, stability, and mobility for individuals with knee, ankle, and foot impairments.

What is a KAFO?

A KAFO is a custom-made orthotic device that covers the knee, ankle, and foot. It is designed to provide support and stability to the affected limb, while also allowing for a natural range of motion. KAFOs are typically used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Knee instability or weakness
  • Ankle instability or weakness
  • Foot drop
  • Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Stroke or traumatic brain injury

Benefits of a KAFO

A KAFO can provide several benefits to individuals with lower limb impairments, including:

  • Improved stability and balance
  • Increased mobility and independence
  • Reduced pain and discomfort
  • Improved gait and posture
  • Enhanced overall function and quality of life

Types of KAFOs

There are several types of KAFOs available, including:

  • Non-weight-bearing KAFOs: Designed for individuals who are unable to bear weight on their affected limb.
  • Weight-bearing KAFOs: Designed for individuals who are able to bear weight on their affected limb.
  • Dynamic KAFOs: Designed for individuals who require a more active range of motion.
  • Static KAFOs: Designed for individuals who require more stability and support.

How is a KAFO fitted and customized?

At Palmetto Orthotics and Prosthetics, our experienced orthotists will work closely with each patient to create a customized KAFO that meets their unique needs and goals. The fitting process typically involves:

  1. Initial assessment: Our orthotist will conduct an initial assessment to determine the patient’s specific needs and goals.
  2. Measurements: Our orthotist will take precise measurements of the patient’s leg, knee, ankle, and foot.
  3. Casting: A cast is taken of the affected limb to create a mold for the KAFO.
  4. Fabrication: The cast is sent to our laboratory, where our skilled technicians fabricate the KAFO using high-quality materials.
  5. Fitting: The patient is fitted with the KAFO in our clinic, where our prosthetist makes any necessary adjustments to ensure a proper fit.
